APPROVAL OF NEW DESIGN PROJECT What a gift for our children! We are so very fortunate that Lincoln Public Schools and our Lincoln community care so much about the quality of our educational system, including our school buildings and facilities!

Morley has been approved for new indoor air quality (heating and air-conditioning), lighting, windows, flooring, paint, five new additional classrooms, modifications for more functional classroom spaces, i.e. modifications to the open classrooms, existing kindergarten classrooms, existing office, and a more adequate, safer and pleasant environment for our children. Also, our portable classrooms will be eliminated, finally bringing our instrumental/strings program and School’s Out Program, inside the building with adequate space and facilities.

This design project is very extensive and will literally improve every classroom at Morley. ALSO, THIS PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION PROJECT WILL REQUIRE US TO BE OFF CAMPUS and RELOCATED AT THE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL, ABBOTT SPORTS COMPLEX, FOR NEXT YEAR, 2009-2010. Just as in building a home, it takes some time, and this large a construction site/project is not safe, nor would it be conducive, to continued excellence in learning and teaching, should we even have the option to stay on site.

The Abbott Sports Complex has been used for years, by other LPS schools, as an alternative site. Knowing it is only for one year, and knowing that we will have as many busses as needed at several pick up sites, makes this relocation very appealing. For option enrollment and special permit students, pick up sites such as at Gere Library, and a site close to 84th and Van Dorn, will be established.

INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS ON THE CONSTRUCTION DESIGN PLAN, IN ADDITION TO TRANSPORTATION MEETINGS, ETC. will be scheduled. We want everyone to be informed, and have the opportunity to ask questions and gather necessary information.

Our architects are still fine tuning plans, but soon will be able to share these plans with all of us. Mr. Scott Wieskamp, LPS Business Affairs, Facilities Director, presented the details of our new project, as known, to our PTO Executive Board on Monday, December 5. I have asked Mr. Wieskamp, along with Mr. Bill McCoy, Director of Transportation, for an informational meeting on both construction design and transportation. This informational meeting will be on Tuesday, February 10, 7:00 pm, in our Morley Gym. I have worked with both Mr. Wieskamp and Mr. McCoy for many years, and they will be most willing to answer any questions we may have. I would urge all of you to come to this important information meeting.

We will, also, arrange a couple of ‘field trips’ to the Abbott Complex. I believe a tour will answer many of our questions. Abbott is a straight ‘shot’ north on 70th, so we will have a pretty direct route.

Most of our children’s pre school and after school activities will not be interrupted. Students will be picked up early for band, chorus, Orff, Hop To Its, Juggle Bugs, and other activities.

The newly approved project, while relocating us for one short year, will prove to be such an improvement to adequately and safely house our Morley Meadowlarks. I am so excited to be a part of ‘building a new house’ for our students and their families. Getting to the completion will be an adventure, in addition to both learning and bonding experiences. I look forward to taking this journey together
