In first grade, each classroom is heterogeneously grouped. Each classroom has high, average, low, and children with special needs as well. For some first grade students, learning is facilitated with the assistance of resource and gifted educators, as well as reading recovery teachers.
Most math and reading instruction is in whole group and/or small group setings, depending on the needs of students within each classroom. Each year may vary, but direct instruction, grouping for activities, and independent practice opportunities are all part of the first grade classroom instructional setting.
